While our attention is on COVID-19, one way you can ensure the long- term health of New Mexico’s residents is by completing the 2020 census. The census secures funding for hospitals, Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), public safety, and other vital services that keep us safe and healthy. The census only happens once every 10 years and informs how federal dollars are allocated to New Mexico for 10 years. In fact, the 2010 Census count helped New Mexico receive over $4 million per year in federal funding for Medicaid and over $69,000 for healthcare centers. While we remain focused on staying healthy and addressing the global pandemic, the census is a step we can all take to ensure that New Mexico’s health systems are supported for the next 10 years. In order to receive the most federal funding for these programs, every person in the state needs to be counted— babies, children, family members, everyone! There was a delay in the U.S. Census Bureau operation to hand-deliver forms to some households because of COVID-19. If you have been waiting on the form to complete your census, don’t worry; you have not missed your chance to participate. Many things in our lives are uncertain right now. But one thing that is certain is that taking part in the census will support the state’s medical infrastructure for the next decade. Do your part to make sure everyone in our state can rely on our health systems to address public health crises and emergencies and even have regular checkups. Complete the census as soon as you receive your invitation from the U.S. Census Bureau. Our health agencies depend on your count. Do you have friends or family who need Medicaid health coverage?
